PUBLIC INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION FOR THE DESIGN PROJECT FOR THE TRANSFORMATION OF THE OLD CITY MARKET INTO A MILTIUSE CENTER
The proposal aims to respond to the two main points raised in the competition rules: the conversion of the Old Municipal Market into a building capable of responding to the new reality of the city, and to serve as an interlocutor between the peripheral areas and the historic center, thus becoming the “gateway to the historic center of Abrantes”.
The proposed intervention seeks to provide solutions for the different activities that take place in it simultaneously, and at the same time has the capacity to be inclusive. It seeks to be a facilitator for citizens, a link between the historic center and the Vale da Fontinha Park. The building itself can solve the connectivity difficulties posed by the topography of the city, turning these difficulties into opportunities.
The building overlooks the Historic Center and, thanks to its privileged location, enjoys fantastic views of the Vale da Fontinha Park. To enhance this, the proposal includes an open amphitheater and a large square where the sidewalks of Av. 25 de Abril will be widened, and pedestrians will have priority over vehicular traffic.
While appreciating the existing structure, it was decided, from a functional and conservation point of view, to preserve the most representative and identifying part of the building: a gallery of stalls included in the first L-shaped structural ring formed by the two main façades. This L-shaped gallery acts as a membrane and bellows between the hustle and bustle of the street and the activities taking place inside.
However, the demolition does not translate into oblivion, but rather seeks a relationship with the pre-existing façade module, which is preserved and transferred to the new porches. This operation of translating the structure of the elevation of the main façade generates a language to configure the new spaces. The façade for the Vale da Fontinha Park becomes an expression of the pre-existence, since the same language is used, but with different resources. The structure as an expression defines the building, proposes the space and facilitates the uses that take place inside.
CONCURSO PÚBLICO INTERNACIONAL PARA LA REDACCIÓN DEL PROYECTO DE CONVERSIÓN DEL ANTIGUO MERCADO MUNICIPAL EN CENTRO MULTIUSOS
La propuesta pretende dar respuesta a los dos puntos principales planteados en las bases del concurso: la conversión del Antiguo Mercado Municipal en un edificio capaz de dar respuesta a la nueva realidad que vive la ciudad, y de servir de interlocutor entre las zonas periféricas y su centro histórico, convirtiéndose así en la “Puerta de entrada al centro histórico de Abrantes”.
La propuesta plantea un edificio que busca dar soluciones a las diferentes actividades simultáneas que se desarrollan en él, y que al mismo tiempo posee capacidad de ser inclusivo. Busca ser un facilitador para la ciudadanía, un engranaje entre el centro histórico y el Parque Vale da Fontinha. El mismo edificio es capaz de resolver las dificultades de conexión que plantea la propia topografía de la ciudad y convertir estas dificultades en una oportunidad.
El edificio se asoma al Centro Histórico, además de disfrutar de unas fantásticas vistas sobre el Parque Vale da Fontinha gracias a su privilegiada posición. Para potenciar esto, la propuesta incorpora un anfiteatro abierto y una gran plaza donde se amplían las aceras de la Av. 25 de Abril y el peatón prima sobre el tráfico rodado.
Valorando la preexistencia, pero siendo críticos con el edificio desde un punto de vista funcional y de conservación, se decidió, por un lado, conservar la parte más representativa e identitaria del edificio: una galería de plateas incluida en el primer anillo estructural en forma de L formado por las dos fachadas principales. Esta galería en forma de L sirve de membrana y fuelle entre el frenesí de la calle y las actividades que se desarrollan en su interior.
